Want to know a secret? You can never have enough workout tops. Between tank tops, sports bras, t-shirts, long sleeve shirts, and jackets, there are endless styles to choose from. But proper attire is key, and the type of shirt you wear may depend on your sweat sesh, so it’s worth upgrading your workout top selection.
“A great workout top makes you feel comfortable and supported during your workout,” says Rebecca Stewart, CPT, a trainer and mobility coach focused on helping clients move without pain. “You don’t want your workout tops to feel too tight because this can restrict your movement, so they should be both functional and make you feel good,” she explains.
Generally speaking, workout tops are going to fall under a few categories: t-shirts, tank tops, short sleeve shirts, long sleeve shirts, crop tops, and more technical compression shirts, says Stewart. Tanks, crop tops, and sports bras are great for sweaty workouts, while long sleeve shirts and jackets are key for cooler climates and keeping your muscles warm, she explains. Compression shirts are made of tighter fitting material that hugs your body to keep your muscles supported, and T-shirts are easy to throw on to take you from gym to errands, she adds.
All that said, it’s important to find a workout top that checks all your boxes in terms of fit, fabric, and extra features like pockets, thumb holes, and reflective materials (more on that soon!), says Stewart. In other words, find a style that allows you to move at peak performance so you can perform your best.

What To Look For In A Workout Top
Fabric: “The fabric of your workout top can make a big difference in how your top performs and what your workout feels like,” says Stewart. Cotton is comfortable and breathable, but typically doesn’t dry sweat as quickly as synthetic materials like polyester and nylon which are quick drying, she explains. Spandex is stretchy, comfortable, and can provide some compression and mesh enhances breathability and airflows, she adds. Stewart’s pro tip? For high-impact or high-intensity workouts, look for materials that are shiny and smooth to reduce chafing and wick sweat. For lower intensity workouts, look for matte fabrics that have a soft, buttery texture for comfort and flexibility.
Built-In Shelf Bra: Some workout tops have built-in shelf bras or bra pad inserts, but this can be a “love it or hate it” situation, says Stewart. For bigger busts or high-intensity activities a built-in bra may not be enough support but find what’s most comfortable for you. “A built-in bra should feel supportive and not bothersome and shouldn’t be too tight or digging in to restrict your movement,” she adds.
Fit: How a top sits on your body is a personal preference, but it’s important to find what supports your workout, says Stewart. “Tops that are more fitted are going to stay in place generally better than flowy tops, so if you’re doing mat work like Pilates or yoga and want your top to stay in place, pick something that’s on the more fitted side,” she explains. On the other hand, flowy tops can be great for biking, cycling, running, and weights.
Reflective Materials: If you work out outside when it’s dark, reflective materials built into a jacket or top adds a safety feature, says Stewart.
Pockets: Some workout tops geared toward running or biking have zippered pockets which are especially helpful for longer workouts when you won’t have access to a purse or locker, says Stewart. Just keep in mind that pockets shouldn’t be restrictive or itchy and should be relatively seamless without adding bulk, she adds.
Thumb Holes And Foldable Cuffs: If you’re opting for a long sleeve shirt or jacket, thumbs holes and/or foldable cuffs are a great feature for keeping your fingers warm and preventing your sleeves from riding up, says Stewart. That said, make sure a thumb hole isn’t pulling at the arm or shoulder fabric, she adds.
Cutouts And Mesh Inserts: Not only are cutouts extra cute, but they add breathability and enhance airflow to keep you cool, says Stewart. Mesh inserts can also increase ventilation, so it’s all about personal preference and the type of coverage you prefer, she explains.
