Education Matters: The Summer Arts program is back at Fresno City College

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE) – Fresno County students from the Summer Arts Academy who love the arts, are being allowed to learn from some of the best in the business.

From the sights and sounds permeating through the campus, you could tell the summer arts program was back at Fresno City College.

“It’s always a fun experience, I love the arts and like there’s honestly so many different classes that I would take if I could,” said Daniel Meija, a student at Roosevelt High School.

Valley students were given the opportunity to experience the different arts.

“We have photography, visual arts mariachi musical theater, acting,” said Jennifer Coull, the arts education coordinator. “We’re trying to cover all the art forms because that’s our goal. We want arts education in all the art forms for all students.”

This is the third year the office of the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools has partnered with Fresno City College to provide this summer program, it is free to students.

“I wanted to attend because I wanted more opportunities to play my instrument and also to be in a group where I can learn more from them and from the teachers here,” said Amelie Brittsan, a student at Roosevelt High School.

Students are learning from some of the best.

Joel Abels, an accomplished performer and director, established stage works in Fresno and brought his skills to students in the musical theater class.

“We are putting a showcase together so they are working on music, choreography, acting blocking,” Abels said. “It’s a lot of skills that are all pieces of what theater and musical theater specifically for my class is.”

One of the goals of this program is to support what’s happening in the classroom. Most of these students are already participating in the arts at their school, which allows them to flourish.

“I took the acting class because I wanted more experiences to get to know and I learned so much from that class alone. Every year I just learn even more,” Meija said.
