Educator of the Week: Mrs. Sagouspe of Copper Hills Elementary School
FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – For a preschool teacher at Copper Hills Elementary School, keeping five-year-olds busy at school can sometimes be a challenge but not for her.
For three decades Kristi Sagouspe’s classrooms all have had one thing in common, getting kids out of their desks and moving.
She’s incorporated hands-on activities that mix playing and speaking out loud to help these five-year-olds sharpen their motor skills.
“I don’t do paper or pencil. It’s all touching and feeling and building and measuring,” Sagouspe said.
TK can often be a tricky time for students. Some come in with more knowledge than others and all perform at different levels.
“About 50% couldn’t even write their name so I see that progression. We just go slowly, we use fine motor skills like adaptive little things to help them with their fine motor skills so they can be able to write,” Sagouspe said.
This teacher has also learned a lot of helpful skills over the years and is ready to pass it down to her class.
“She teaches me, and I like to learn and I like her because she’s the best teacher,” said Sapphi Vang, a student of Sagouspe.
With the end of the school year almost here Sagouspe is excited to keep going and take on next year’s challenges
“Be so excited about learning and love school if I’ve done those two things then I feel that my goal for the year has been met,” Sagouspe.
