This Elderly Couple's Wedding Announcement Went Viral for the Best Reason
A mutual friend introduced Alvin Mann to Gertrude Mokotoff at a gym in Middletown, N.Y. Eight years later, they both still work out there twice a week. He's 94, she's 98-and they just got married.
On their first date, they went to a restaurant called Something Sweet. "He was a perfect gentleman," Gertrude told The New York Times, and Alvin chimed in that "there was something about her that made me want to keep on talking."
Both had lived full lives long before meeting in the gym. She was a biology professor and the former mayor of Middletown, and he's a World War II veteran and retired businessman. Both widowed from their previous marriages, the couple has seven children, 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren between them.
Even though they each have nearly a century of life experience, the couple says they don't feel old.
"Age doesn't mean a damn thing to me or to Gert," Alvin told the publication. "We don't see it as a barrier. We still do what we want to do in life."
So it was no surprise when Gertrude defied tradition in June and asked Alvin to marry her.
According to The New York Times, they were wed on Aug. 5 at Middletown City Hall, surrounded by loving friends, family, and neighbors.
On August 20 they will celebrate another milestone together, when Gertrude turns 99. But to this couple, her age is just a number.
"People always ask what it is that keeps us young," Alvin said. "Of course, one part of it is medical science, but the bigger part is that we live worry-free lives; we do not let anything we cannot control bother us in the least."
