Kamala Harris's stepdaughter Ella Emhoff, 22, makes high-fashion runway debut in Paris
Ella Emhoff is living the high fashion life.
America’s 22-year-old second daughter — whose father, Douglas Emhoff, is married to Vice President Kamala Harris — posed for Balenciaga this week, as revealed in a series of shots posted to the brand’s Instagram. The news comes months after Emhoff signed with IMG Models.
The Parsons School of Design alum, who studied fine art and textiles in school, caught the fashion world’s attention shortly after her stepmom was inaugurated in January — and Emhoff was seen sporting a stylish (and soon-viral) Miu Miu coat to the ceremony.
In a video for Vogue earlier this year, Emhoff mused about how unexpected her life had become.
"I think life really did a 180,” she explained. “Obviously things are changing, life has changed. There’s a lot more people involved in my life now.”
Though Emhoff, who designs her own knitwear, is now paid to pose in other people’s clothes, she’s creating a style all her own. That includes her hairdo of choice, which she described as “mullet” adjacent. While the look is routinely joked about for its “business in the front, party in the back” aesthetic (as the 2001 film Joe Dirt put it) Emhoff is all about reclaiming it.
“The more you have this style, the more you want to push the limits of how mullet-y you can get it,” Emhoff explained to Vogue. “I feel like in the past, the mullet was deemed unattractive and kind of odd, and I’m really drawn to that almost ugly-chic look.”
For Emhoff, Balenciaga is only the beginning.
