Elle Fanning Channels Catherine the Great in Gucci and Fred Leighton at the Golden Globes
Nominated for her performance as Catherine the Great in Hulu's The Great, Elle Fanning channeled the Empress of Russia in a sparkling Gucci gown and diamond tassel Fred Leighton earrings for the 2021 Golden Globes. Catherine the Great, who ruled over Russia during its Golden Age, loved her jewels (one suitor tried to win her over with a 190-carat diamond—she kept the diamond, but still snubbed the man), and in her portraits she is always bedecked in diamonds, emeralds, and pearls. For her, jewelry was a power play: legend has it that she always put on a few extra emeralds before meeting her generals.
Similarly, Fanning not only put on dramatic briolette-cut diamond tassels, custom made by Fred Leighton (the atelier worked feverishly to construct the earrings in one day to accommodate the actress’s schedule), but she also piled on three rings and two bracelets, all vintage Art Deco from Fred Leighton. Her Gucci dress has no shortage of bling either, with crystal embellished straps and an accented low back.
The Great follows Catherine from the beginning of her marriage to Peter III of Russia, as she transforms from a na?ve princess into a cunning royal force. Fanning has been nominated for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy for her performance and her co-star Nicholas Hoult, who portrays Peter III, has been nominated for Best Actor. The show itself is also up for the award of best Television Series in its category. It has been confirmed that there will be a season two, although the date has yet to be released.
A star in her own right, Fanning certainly doesn’t need jewelry to impress the audience, but as Catherine well knew, an extra diamond or two (or three) goes a long way in making history as a leading lady.
