Will Ellen Pompeo Scrub in for 'Grey's Anatomy' Season 20?

The lights are still on at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. In March, ABC confirmed that Grey's Anatomy would get a landmark 20th season, extending its record as the longest-running primetime medical drama on TV. The news came about a month after Ellen Pompeo announced that she would be exiting the series in Season 19. So, what's in store for the landmark show going forward? Here's everything we know about Season 20 of Grey's Anatomy so far.

Will there be a Grey's Anatomy Season 20?

We've got a pulse! ABC ordered a 20th season of Grey’s Anatomy, its longest-running primetime scripted series, in March 2023. The network simultaneously announced that executive producer Meg Marinis, who's worked on Grey's in some capacity since Season 3, would replace Krista Vernoff as showrunner.

Who is in the Grey's Anatomy Season 20 cast?

According to Deadline, contracts for several Grey's Anatomy cast members, including Kevin McKidd (Owen), Kim Raver (Teddy), Camilla Luddington (Jo) and Caterina Scorsone (Amelia), are up at the end of Season 19. Although anything is possible in the world of Grey's, where main characters are killed off with abandon, let's assume for now that ABC will close those actors' deals. In that case, the Season 20 cast will include:

Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey)

Chandra Wilson has played Dr. Bailey on Grey's Anatomy since the show premiered in 2005.

James Pickens Jr. (Richard Webber)

James Pickens Jr. has been scrubbing in as Dr. Webber since the start of the series.

Kevin McKidd (Owen Hunt)

Kevin McKidd joined the show in Season 5. In a recent interview with RadioTimes.com, he dispelled rumors he's on his way out. "I love playing my character on Grey’s, I love what it’s done for my life and it’s like a family. Truly," he said.

"We’ve been there so long, we’ve seen people have babies, get married, have sad things happen in their lives, kids' graduations, it’s been so long now. It’s like my extended family. So I’m not going anywhere any time soon from that show."

Kim Raver (Teddy Altman)

Kim Raver joined Grey's Anatomy in its sixth season, stayed on for three years, then left. She returned as Teddy in Season 14—and has been back ever since.

Caterina Scorsone (Amelia Shepherd)

Caterina Scorsone entered the Shondaland universe as Derek Shepherd's sister in 2010, with a role on Private Practice. After making a handful of guest appearances on Grey's Anatomy, she became a series regular on the show in its eleventh season.

Camilla Luddington (Jo Wilson)

Camila Luddington had a recurring role as Jo in Season 10 and became a series regular the following year.

Chris Carmack (Atticus 'Link' Lincoln)

Chris Carmack joined the show in 2018. His character, Link, has been a love interest to both Jo and Amelia. We thank him for his service.

Anthony Hill (Dr. Winston Ndugu)

There was some question as to whether Anthony Hill, who joined the show as Dr. Winston Ndugu in Season 16, would return for Season 20. After all, his character is married to Dr. Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary), who's off to build hearts in Chicago. But as we learned in McCreary's two-episode goodbye arc, Maggie and Winston have decided to go their separate ways. He's staying in Seattle.

Jake Borelli (Levi Schmitt)

Jake Borelli started out as a recurring character in Season 14. He memorably came out as gay alongside his character, Levi Schmitt, who came out in Season 15.

Season 19 introduced five new main characters who are likely to be back—and presumably with bigger story lines!—for Season 20. They were played by Harry Shum Jr. (Benson Kwan); Adelaide Kane (Jules Millin); Alexis Floyd (Simone Griffin); Niko Terho (Lucas Adams); and Midori Francis (Mika Yasuda).

Will Ellen Pompeo be in Season 20 of Grey's Anatomy?

The million dollar question. Ellen Pompeo's "last" episode of the show was its Season 19 midseason premiere, but she stayed on as a narrator and executive producer, and she's expected to return for the Season 19 finale on May 18. According to Deadline, the actress is likely to appear in Season 20 as well, but there is no "acting deal" just yet. Watch this space for updates.
