Elon Musk Is the Latest Mogul to Attempt to Host SNL
Because we evidently live in the upside down, Tesla CEO Elon Musk will host the May 8th episode of “Saturday Night Live,” with musical guest Miley Cyrus. Cyrus, who is actually part cyborg, is a fitting choice to pair with the tech CEO who has made a career out of launching robots into space while hanging out in a neon bunker underneath the Las Vegas strip. He’s a real man of the people, that Musk!
If you’re wondering what on Mars Musk is doing hosting SNL, you aren’t alone. Usually hosts swing by Studio 8H as part of a promotion tour for an upcoming release of a movie or television show, or perhaps as a victory lap after a Superbowl win. What’s less common is hosting the storied series to drum up excitement for your Dragon spacecraft’s recent second trip to the International Space Station, but that appears to be the reason for Musk’s visit.
Honestly, I hate this. Sure, Elon Musk is funny, but not like that! He's no Bill Murray. He's more like the gopher who tortures Bill Murray in “Caddyshack.” And I think we can all agree that the gopher would be a terrible 'SNL' host. My guess is that Musk's massive ego will get in the way of his ability to either make or take a joke.
We’ve actually seen this happen before when other moguls—and I’m using that term very loosely here— have hosted SNL. Tina Fey famously called “business mogul” Paris Hilton “a piece of sh*t” when describing the time she hosted “SNL” to Howard Stern. “The people at SNL were like 'Maybe she'll be fun, maybe she won't take herself so seriously.' She takes herself so seriously!” said Fey.
Also, remember when disgraced real estate mogul Donald Trump hosted SNL in 2004? The sentient sunburn was there to promote his new show “The Apprentice,” and he played a gross, exagerrated version of himself in almost every sketch — what range!
So we’ll see what Musk comes up with, but I am not expecting an out-of-this world performance. I do however support the idea of Jeff Bezos being the next “The Bachelor”’ and Bill Gates competing on “Ru Paul’s Drag Race.”
