Emily Blunt says she received backlash for joking about Donald Trump
To quote a certain unforgettable assistant from The Devil Wears Prada, fans can expect to hear less **hands flapping like a chatty mouth** and more **clenched fist to signal shutting up** out of Emily Blunt — at least as far as Donald Trump is concerned.
In a new interview with ES Magazine, the Quiet Place actress reveals that she’s shied away from talking American politics after experiencing fallout from a 2015 joke about the then presidential candidate.

“I became an American citizen recently, and that night, we watched the Republican debate and I thought, This was a terrible mistake. What have I done?'” the British star quipped to the Hollywood Reporter at the time.
Many conservatives were offended by the remark, and Blunt now says she’s more “careful” about what she says.
“It was a fairly innocuous joke because, you know, where I’m from we poke fun at our public figures,” she told ES. “I think I wasn’t quite American enough to be able to say that. I have to be really careful now. Certain subjects, I just can’t. Because I’m also someone who loathes getting in trouble. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve loathed getting in trouble.”
Trouble’s one thing; being targeted by an angry Trump tweet is on a whole other level.
