Emily Ratajkowski calls out critics who question her whirlwind wedding — and her sexy selfies

Emily Ratajkowski is on the cover of Marie Claire‘s June issue, and she’s got some things to get off her chest.

In her interview with activist Janet Mock, the model-turned-actress addresses her surprise elopement with Sebastian Bear-McClard. Ratajkowski announced the marriage on Instagram in early March and posted footage of their City Hall wedding, for which she overthrew tradition by wearing a mustard-yellow Zara suit and a black veiled fedora.

“When you don’t have a real wedding, it’s for you,” Ratajkowski tells Mock of the unconventional bridal look. “I wore what I wanted to wear. It really felt like the outfit that was most me, and that made me feel good.”

What doesn’t make her feel so good, however, are cynical comments bashing her relationship.

“People came after my marriage, like, ‘Wow. I give it three weeks,'”Ratajkowski says. “I’m like, ‘What?’ No one can take women seriously on any choices that they make, especially if they’re unique to them and they don’t play into the way we think women should get married. It’s a constant writing-off.”

The same is true of some of the shaming responses the I Feel Pretty star receives when she (frequently) posts a revealing selfie on Instagram. According to Ratajkowski, many struggle to accept the image of a woman who is comfortable and confident in her own skin — clothed or not.

“We grow up in this patriarchal, misogynistic culture, and women fantasize about watching themselves through a male gaze,” she notes. “But if a woman decided that she likes herself in a gaze, and it makes her happy, should she feel the burden of where that comes from? I don’t know the answer. That’s now what feminism is about. It’s freedom of choice. Do what you feel like!”

Troll her all you like, but she’s not backing down when it comes to celebrating her sexuality or her body.

“Boobs are funny,” she tells Mock. “They hurt sometimes, and sometimes they’re the thing that makes me feel the most powerful. They’re a key to my sexuality. They’re all those things. I remember there was some article like ‘Emily Ratajkowski Is the Mozart of Breasts.’ What was so bad is someone sent it to my dad, who sent it to me. My dad still sees me as a little kid. I love my boobs. I love other people’s boobs. Boobs are kind of great.”

Who is anyone to argue?
