A family-owned wood studio, located along the coast of Sorrento, Italy, meticulously assembles tiny pieces of colored veneers. This technique, known as intarsia or wood inlay, has been perfected since the 15th century in Sorrento, which is renowned for producing intricate inlays on items ranging from architecture to music boxes to trays.

The city's artisans, deeply inspired by marquetry techniques and designs from the East, evolved their unique style over the centuries. It often highlights traditional Italian scenes, including seashell grottos, urns brimming with lemons, and other natural elements from the surrounding landscape. Sorrento's distinctive craftsmanship gained widespread acclaim when it captivated aristocratic Grand Tour travelers in the 18th century.

Biagio Barile, a fourth-generation family enterprise, combines a modern vision with traditional craftsmanship and has captured the attention of luxury brands like Gucci and Dior in recent years. The father-son duo, Biagio and Enzo, infuse traditional intarsia mosaics with a passion for geometric designs. Their boxes and trays serve as a masterclass in graphic patterning, adorned with vibrant stripes, squares, chevrons and circles. Owning a piece by Biagio Barile is like owning a slice of modern art.

Offered through luxury brand Abask, Biagio Barile's Angolo box is featured in our January/February 2024 issue, and we are giving one away!
