  • Erin and Ben Napier welcomed daughter Helen, 2, in January 2018, less than a week before the Season 2 premiere of their hit HGTV series Home Town.

  • The couple were told not long before having Helen that it "wasn't likely" for Erin to have children.

Erin and Ben Napier can't imagine life without their precious two-year-old daughter, Helen. But for a while, the stars of HGTV's Home Town series thought they might never be able to have a biological child.

After Erin was diagnosed with a perforated appendix, she was told that it "wasn't likely" for her to have children.

"I wanted a family desperately. So that was a hard place to be. It was really difficult," Erin tells People magazine in a new interview. "And then when it happened, it felt like this huge release. Like, 'Well, I don't have to worry about that anymore—that decision has been made for me. So she's on her way.' "

"And then it was just joy," Erin adds. "It was just absolute joy and it was a wonderful experience and I just don't know what our life would look like without [Helen] in it."

The news that Erin was pregnant with Helen came as a surprise to the couple—albeit a very welcome one.

"We were making a TV show," Ben says of the couple's hit series, Home Town, which recently wrapped its fourth season. "Having children was not a priority for us at the time; we weren't trying to have kids or anything. Just like Erin said, that decision was made for us. But yeah, [Helen] is just awesome."

The couple say they haven't decided yet whether they want to try for more children. In fact, they might leave the decision up to fate.

"It was a surprise the first time, [so] I figure it'll be a surprise the next time too," Erin says.

For now, the happy couple are enjoying every moment with little Helen.

"It's a sweet time," Erin says. "I wish she could be two forever."

So cute! We are so happy for this adorable family.
