Despite the story being set in North Carolina, the show's actual filming location is in a different state.

Fans have clamored for every single detail they can find about the hit series Outer Banks ever since the show premiered in April 2020. With the release of the third season on Feb. 23, 2023, it's time to dive into the filming locations for the series.

Outer Banks was created by Josh Pate, Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke, who pitched a story to Netflix about the Pogues, a group of working-class teens, and the Kooks, the wealthy visitors who only spend part of the year in the town. In March 2022, Josh Pate admitted to Garden & Gun that he didn't think the show had a shot. He said, "When we took the pitch out initially, I kind of thought this might be the least sellable pitch that I’ve ever gone out with it."

Clearly, Josh couldn't have been more wrong, as the show has taken off in a major way. If you're one of the millions who can't get enough of Outer Banks, we are answering all of your questions about where the show films and why right now.

Where is Outer Banks filmed?

Season three of Outer Banks was filmed in and around Charleston, South Carolina, in the southern United States. This might comes as a surprise to many, since the show is named after and set in Outer Banks, North Carolina—Charleston's neighbor to the north. It turns out Netflix has a good reason for choosing to film in South Carolina instead.

Why is Outer Banks filmed in South Carolina?

As a lot of fans already know, Outer Banks is set in a town by the same name in the state of North Carolina. Producers made the decision to film the show in South Carolina in response to North Carolina's 2017 House Bill 2, also known as "the bathroom bill," which requires transgender people to use the restroom that corresponds to their sex at birth.

Show creator and native North Carolinian Jonas Pate supported the decision. As he told The Fayetteville Observer, "This tiny law is costing this town 70 good, clean, pension-paying jobs and also sending a message to those people who can bring these jobs and more that North Carolina still doesn’t get it."

What are some places people will recognize in season 3 of Outer Banks?

Eagle-eyed fans will have a field day with season three of Outer Banks. There are a number of popular spots that have doubled as filming locations for the show, including the home of Sarah Cameron's family, which is actually the popular wedding venue Lowndes Grove.

Another spot that's easy to visit is the Gaillard Center, which doubles as the UNC Chapel Hill Law Library in the show.

There are also a number of local businesses in Charleston that pop up in the show, including Ben Silver (which sells a seersucker jacket John B. wears on the show online) and Burbage's Grocery (viewers of the show might know it better as Interstate Batteries).
