An Exclusive Look at the First Full Trailer for The Gilded Age Season 2
The Gilded Age, Julian Fellowes's sumptuous period piece set in New York City in the titular era of opulence and class conflict, comes back for its second chapter later this month, and if the trailer is any indication, it's going to be a dramatic one.
The preview, premiering exclusively on Town & Country today, promises the return of favorite characters like Bertha Russell (played by Carrie Coon), Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski), and Peggy Scott (Denée Benton). It also teases a few fresh faces, particularly new love interests for both Ada (Cynthia Nixon) and Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson).
"We are lucky enough to welcome back our original cast, and also to introduce some new faces, like the excellent Laura Benanti and the very moving Robert Sean Leonard, both of whom are open to the possibility of love from two of our running characters. Naturally, I cannot say who," Fellowes tells T&C.
But, per the clip, season two isn't all about romance. The ongoing old money versus new conflict rears its head once again as Mrs. Russell attempts to bring a new opera house to the city.
"Bertha has two battles this season: the very public opera battle and a more private one at home," Sonja Warfield, the show's writer and executive producer tells Town & Country. "Will she come away the victor in the opera war with her marriage still intact? Viewers will have to tune in to see."
The Russells appear to find themselves not only at odds with the NYC's established aristocracy, but also at the center of another class "war" with the trailer previewing a potential labor strike, presumably among robber baron George Russell's rail line workers. "Why must I be the villain in every story?" Russell (Morgan Spector) says. "I have lifted whole towns out of poverty!"
And Peggy seems both to want to return to East 61st Street, and head south to cover the opening of a school in Tuskegee. All the while, the costumes remain lavish; the set pieces indulgent, and Christine Baranski's delivery, exceptionally witty.
