Volkwagen may have just tied itself into a quite a knot with its craft-savvy customers-and it's guaranteed to leave you in stitches. In the car company's new commercial, a man finishes knitting a stocking hat to slip onto the side view mirror of a Volkswagen yarn bombed in crochet granny squares.

"Keep your loved ones cozy this winter," reads the ad's tagline. The only problem? Knitters and crocheters were quick to point out that the two are totally different textiles, even if they do both deal with loops of yarn.

"If the whole car is covered in crochet granny squares, why is this dude knitting the side view cover?" asked one commenter. "Did he do all the crocheting, or did VW just cast a knitting guy to show how hip they (VW) are? Who did the real work? This knitter wants to know!"

Other fiber artists chimed in: "Volkswagen was not prepared for the continuity questions that would follow this commercial. Fiber Freaks can sniff out a craft imposter from a mile away!"

Another left laughing emojis and the message: "Shame on you VW!!! It's an insult to all us hookers out there!!"

A flood of other questions and criticisms followed, pulling apart the commercial: Where did the needles go? He obviously can't even knit! Who puts a pom-pom on prior to finishing the hat?

In case Volkswagen is wondering, the difference between knit and crochet is that knitting involves creating loops with two needles and then moving the loops back and forth, while crochet uses one hook to, well, hook loops together.

Perhaps the brand thought mixing the methods would be OK-but it's safe to say that these crafters aren't letting them off the hook (pun intended).
