Though Brie Larson has been in the entertainment business for over twenty years — even earning an Academy Award for her role in Room back in 2015 — the California-born and bred actress and filmmaker didn’t truly feel comfortable in the makeup chair until fairly recently, when she stepped into the role of Captain Marvel. Playing a superhero helped her realize the transformative power of hair and makeup in crafting a character, and she’s continued to tap into these elements as change agents for roles ever since. “[Now] for my job, I really use [beauty] as a tool of conveying a person that's separate from myself,” Larson told Allure in 2020. “I'm trying to get under the skin of the person that I'm playing… I always need to find a ritual of how I get back into myself because it's part of the completion of the cycle.”

Skincare has always come a little more naturally for the A-lister though, probably because taking care of her face and body is what allows her to be confident and blissfully makeup-free when the cameras aren’t rolling. Serving as a global brand muse for Japanese luxury brand Decorté, Larson has embraced the rituals of moisturizing, masking, and just taking little moments of self-care for herself while spending so much time at home these days. If you’re laid-back about beauty and looking to indulge in this way as well, then let Larson be your muse, too. Though notoriously private about her personal life, she’s more than willing to dish on all things hair, makeup, and wellness. Here, you’ll learn the secrets behind Brie's flawless skin, self-care practices, and favorite makeup looks.

She’s low-key about makeup but loves to experiment.

The star has started not one but two personal projects since quarantine began, the podcast Learning Lots with her best friend, Jessie Enis, and a YouTube channel where she vlogs about everything from her nighttime routine to fitness, her struggle with rosacea and even audition failures. The coolest thing about her videos? She’s been doing her own makeup for them, which has given her tons of freedom to play around with different looks. “I'll usually just put on a little bit of foundation, fill in my brows, mascara, the [Decorté] lip oil, and like a little bit of blush,” says Brie. “Sometimes I'm like, ‘Okay, I guess I'm going to just try eye shadow today,’” she told Elle. “I wore a red lip around the house like two days ago and it was super fun.”

The upshot here? She isn’t afraid to try new techniques for playing up her features, and she’s happy to put on makeup just for the fun of it. “It doesn't have to be for anyone else or some big to-do,” she told InStyle. “It's recognizing that now more than ever, we have to take care of ourselves so that we can be of service to the rest of the world.”

Gua sha helps her wind down at night.

In addition to regular moisturizing and masking, the actress recently started adding gua sha to her nighttime routine, which helps with her jaw clenching. “This past year I also integrated new skincare and self-care rituals into my life, like the practice of using a gua sha,” the actress told People. “It has major benefits for the skin and helps release tension." A true multitasker, she typically uses hers while she watches TV and applies face oil first, so the gua sha stone glides easily over her skin.

She uses this brand to reset her hair between jobs.

Life as a working actor may sound like it's all glamour all the time, but it can be grueling — even when it comes to just sitting in that hair and makeup chair. That’s why Brie has had to find hero products to help restore herself, particularly when it comes to her golden blonde hair. “When I'm filming, my hair has constant heat, product and styling exposure,” the actress explained to People. “I've found this brand does a great job helping to keep it strong and healthy, and long-lasting color protection."

Beauty sleep is her best friend.

When it comes to looking and feeling her best, Brie doesn’t downplay the importance of rest, and she does her best to catch quality zzz’s no matter what she’s doing or where she is. “Sleep is an essential element to healthy skin and overall wellness,” she told People. “I travel with this mask everywhere and find it particularly helpful when I'm trying to acclimate to a new time zone."

She turns to sheet masks to boost her mood.

"I find that sheet masks can really fix my mood, so I'm very sheet mask motivated," Brie told InStyle. "I love the under eye masks as well. Those are just little extra things you can add to your routine that feel luxurious."

Scent helps her set a chill, spa-like mood at home.

Whether she’s getting ready for the day or unwinding after work, the actress is all about rituals, and the first one she follows is super simple: taking a beat to wake up and smell the… moisturizer. It may sound strange, but at the start of her day, she literally rubs her hands together and smells her face cream before putting it on. It’s the little things in life!

She’s also a fan of essential oil blends (which she puts in her Vitruvi diffuser) and other earthy scents. “I’ve been burning frankincense in the house too, because it not only smells great, but it’s great for cleansing the air in the house; it’s anti-microbial,” she told W Magazine.
