Family members surprise bride with a throwback musical performance
A video of a groom surprising his bride with an old-school song involving more than a dozen family members is going viral.
Ali Gilmartin, 28, was involved in all the planning of her Oct. 28 wedding to Tyler Davis, 31, at Kohl Mansion in Burlingame, Calif. So when her new husband suddenly hopped onstage with all the men in their families — in the middle of the reception dinner — she got nervous. “I was like, ‘What’s going on? I don’t want any surprises on my wedding day!’” Gilmartin tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “But once our families got onstage, I knew — my family is very musical.”

After a short introduction from Gilmartin’s Uncle Joe, who said, “It’s important, so important, that you know we would do anything for you, including this,” the men broke out in the 1948 song “Once in Love With Amy,” written by Frank Loesser.
“Once in love with Ali,” sang the men, subbing in the bride’s name. “Always in love with Ali/Ever and ever fascinated by her/Sets your heart on fire to stay. …”
The video was shot by Kurtela Video Productions in Palo Alto, Calif., and was a collaboration by Davis and Gilmartin’s uncles, brothers, grandfather, and other extended family members. “But it was my nana Maurine’s idea,” says Gilmartin. “Singing is an old tradition in my family — at my parents’ wedding 35 years ago, my dad sang ‘Honey Bun’ to my mom, although he forgot the lyrics halfway through.”
The bride adds that although she was completely surprised, she knew something was up. “During our wedding week, Tyler fibbed about where he was,” she says. “One night said he was getting a drink. And my parents said they had a ‘business meeting’ at their house so I wouldn’t come over.”
The performance was a hit and only required two or three practice sessions. The couple from San Mateo, Calif., is currently on their honeymoon in Mexico. “Tyler’s family went all in on this,” says Gilmartin. “It was really special.”
