Fans Love Unearthed Video of Michael J. Fox Playing Guitar With Coldplay
Fans are seriously impressed by Michael J. Fox's musical capabilities after seeing a throwback clip of the actor playing guitar with Coldplay.
The Instagram account historyhits124 recently shared a clip of Fox onstage during Coldplay's 2016 concert in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Chris Martin and the rest of the band brought Fox up to play as a surprise, and together they performed "Johnny B. Goode," a song originally by Chuck Berry. The track was featured in the film Back to the Future, in which Fox's character Marty McFly and the Starlighters perform the song at a dance.
Coldplay also shared a video of the performance on YouTube shortly after the concert.
Many fans seeing the video for the first time were stunned at Fox's skills on guitar, sharing their amazement in the comments on Instagram.
"Love him so much! So much talent and kindness within this man," read one comment, while another person wrote, "How did I not know Michael J FOX played a rad guitar ??????."
"Such an incredible, talented man ????," commented a third.
Someone in attendance at the 2016 concert described the atmosphere: "I was at the Met Life stadium. When Michael Fox came out on stage and played this the place went crazy. It was a pretty awesome surprise in an already incredible show."
Fox has a long history of playing guitar. In the 1980s, while preparing for his role in Back to the Future, the actor even put in the time and effort to learn the guitar solo part for "Johnny B. Goode."
While the guitar solo audio featured in the final film was actually performed by musician Tim May, Fox's hard work helped him ensure that McFly's finger movements were accurate.
Fox even said in an interview with AARP The Magazine, "A lot of really great guitarists have come up to me over the years and said they picked up the guitar because of the 'Johnny B. Goode' scene in Back to the Future. If I did anything in this life, I got John Mayer to pick up the guitar!"
In the years since the 2016 performance, the 62-year-old's battle with Parkinson's disease has continued. Due to the disease's progression, Fox sadly cannot play guitar like he once could. However, he has still found success with creative pursuits, releasing the critically-acclaimed documentary Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie in 2023.
