After almost five months of being off the air due to the WGA strike, fans of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert were ecstatic to see the late night talk series back on their television screens. Upon seeing Stephen Colbert return to the stage at the Ed Sullivan Theater to give his opening monologue to a full audience in early October, the energy felt as if the show never had a pause in production.

But on October 16, viewers were given another surprise they didn't see coming. Upon watching the first few minutes of the show, they noticed that Stephen wasn't standing in front of his iconic TV desk. Instead, they saw him wearing headphones and delivering a new set of jokes from the comfort of his own home. What's more, a few hours ahead of the episode airing at 11:35 p.m. ET, The Late Show confirmed on social media that Stephen would not be in studio.

So, what happened to Stephen that caused him to skip out from attending the taping? And more importantly, when will Stephen be back in The Late Show seat? Thankfully, there are some answers in regards to his absence.

Where is Stephen Colbert tonight on The Late Show?

Stephen announced he wasn't filming The Late Show in front of an audience after testing positive for COVID-19. He explained his absence during his opening monologue on October 16, saying he decided to take a rapid test after waking up feeling poorly.

"Keen eyed viewers may notice that tonight's show looks just a little different. I am not presently in the Ed Sullivan Theater. I'm in the Ed Sulli-my house. This morning, I woke up feeling not great. Flaming throat, a little sweaty, cough-y. I took one of those at-home tests and it said that I am not pregnant. Then I took a COVID test and it told me I am pregnant with COVID. So, I took three more tests and they all agreed."

As for where Stephen is tonight, it's likely he'll still be at home while he continues to isolate and recover from illness. That doesn't mean he'll stop his already-announced interview schedule, as guests like Rachel Maddow, Keegan-Michael Key and the show's former bandleader Jon Batiste are all slated to appear on The Late Show this week.

It's also important to note that this isn't the only time Stephen stepped out of the studio for COVID-19. Deadline noted that the TV personality paused production back in April and in May after testing positive for the virus both times.

Naturally, fans were hoping that Stephen felt better soon. "Get well soon Stephen ?? We love you too," one wrote. "Rest, Stephen. Hope you’re feeling better soon," said another. "Get well and take it easy. We‘ll be here when you get back," someone else wrote.

We too are wishing Stephen a speedy recovery and are looking forward to seeing him back in the studio soon!
