Fans React to Confirmation That Velma Is a Lesbian in New 'Scooby-Doo' Movie
It's the first time it's been confirmed within the world of 'Scooby-Doo.'
Fans of Scooby-Doo and the gang have long believed Velma to be gay. And while Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated producer Tony Cervone and live-action film writer James Gunn both confirmed the suspicions of many a couple of years ago, it was never explicitly stated in any iteration of Scooby-Doo.
That is, until now.
The newest addition to Scooby-Doo cannon premiered today, Oct. 4, and Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! makes it clear that Velma is undoubtedly into women.
Upon meeting fashion designer Coco Diablo, Velma immediately becomes tongue-tied, her glasses fogging up and blood flooding her cheeks.
Later, when the costumer puts her hand on Velma's shoulder, the investigator looks euphoric, and for anyone not convinced, she also admits her giant crush to Daphne at another point in the film.
Those that have been waiting for this moment for years are absolutely thriving. Twitter has blown up with positive responses, flushing out those who don't have anything nice to say.
"OMG LESBIAN VELMA FINALLY CANON...LETS GOOOOOO," one Twitter user wrote in response.
"all of lesbian twitter about velma dinkley rn [sic]," wrote another, sharing a screenshot captioned, "I mean, she is a lesbian icon."
The celebratory tweets continued:
As did the callouts to those who had watered down previous scripts to remove traces of Velma's intended sexuality:
Others also took a moment to call out the film's animation. "...there’s something about the animation of Velma blushing and her glasses fogging up that just hits," one user wrote in part.
And even Hayley Kiyoko, who played Velma in another live-action telling in 2009, spoke up about the news:
In the end, it all came full circle.
