Fashmatics: Padmé + Japanese Students + The Fat Jew = Thom Browne
For women who may have been fans of Thom Browne’s Spring 2016 menswear show, but were unable to fit into the tailored garments, the designer provided hope this evening. His seasonal sister collection featured strikingly similar suits and coats with the same intricate embroidery inspired by Japanese culture — think cherry blossoms, pastoral settings, geishas, koi fish, bamboo et al. Browne, who earlier this month told us that he liked to use his shows to feed his directorial whims, created a sterile wooden classroom that the models circled before they occupied the 30 or so desks to chat and pass notes. Constructed under the haze of fluorescent lighting, it was no wonder that the looks symbolized funkier renditions of school uniforms. Further rebellion came in the form of glam: makeup that resembled Natalie Portman’s character Padmé from Star Wars and double braids that shot straight out of the top of their pretty little heads. This hair-raising detail reminded us of another not-so-obedient character otherwise known at the Fat Jew.
