Is 'Fast X: Part 2' Really the End of the Franchise?
Fast X
Dominic Toretto lives his life a quarter mile at a time—and in two-hour installments that hit theaters every two to three years. His last adventure, 2023’s Fast X, was actually the first installment in a two-part series documenting Dom’s battle with Dante Reyes, the flamboyant son of Fast Five’s Hernan Reyes. Dante is the rare villain capable of besting Dom and his crew of street racers turned international heist specialists, so naturally, a second movie (Fast X: Part 2) is required to make sure the good guys win this time.
“This summer is only the beginning of Fast X,” Vin Diesel, who’s played Dom since 2001, told the crowd at CinemaCon in April 2023 ahead of Fast X’s premiere. “And with all of your effort and with all of your love and the fact that you are a part of our family, Fast X will continue. And after this explosive summer, I will have the privilege of coming to you for Part 2 in 2025.”
Whether that release date is feasible remains to be seen, as the dual writers’ and actors’ strikes of 2023 pushed production back on most film and TV projects, but Fast fans know to never lose faith in Dom. You don’t turn your back on family!

What is Fast X: Part 2 about?
No plot details for Fast X: Part 2 have been revealed, but the safe assumption is that the movie will follow Dom’s crew as they settle their beef with Dante (Jason Momoa) once and for all. The events of Fast X were … numerous, but the gist is this: Dante is the son of the late Hernan Reyes (Joaquim de Almeida), the drug lord that the crew stole $100 million from in 2011’s Fast Five, and he wants revenge for the death of his dad and the theft of his family fortune. While Dante is by far the kookiest villain to tangle with Dom’s crew, he’s also the most formidable, outsmarting them at every turn.
At the end of the film, the fates of pretty much every character were left up in the air, as Dante had detonated explosives on the bridge where Dom and son Little B (Leo Abelo Perry) were standing. Dante’s associate Aimes (Alan Ritchson), meanwhile, shot down the plane carrying Roman (Tyrese Gibson), Tej (Ludacris), Han (Sung Kang) and Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel) to Dom’s aid. Dom’s brother, Jakob (John Cena), sacrificed his life to save Little B. In one of two major twists, Gisele (Gal Gadot) was revealed to be alive after seemingly dying in 2013’s Fast & Furious 6. At the end of the movie, she was on her way to rescue Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) and Cipher (Charlize Theron) from a black site in Antarctica.
Who’s in Fast X: Part 2?
No casting announcements have been officially made, but it’s likely that the entire crew will return—with the possible exception of John Cena, whose character, Jakob Toretto, died in Fast X. On the other hand, no one ever really dies in the Fast universe, so don’t rule it out.
Vin Diesel (Dominic Toretto)
While the end of Fast X didn’t reveal Dom’s fate after the bridge explosion, he will obviously be back for round 11. There is simply no Fast and Furious without Dominic Toretto and his family.
Michelle Rodriguez (Letty Ortiz)
Letty spent much of Fast X locked in a black site with villain-turned-ally Cipher, but it seems she’s about to get free with help from Gisele, who has been presumed dead since Fast & Furious 6.
Tyrese Gibson (Roman Pearce)
After going to space in F9, Roman stayed earthbound in Fast X, but he was one of the people on the plane that Dante’s pal Aimes shot down at the end of the movie. As a core member of the crew since 2003’s 2 Fast 2 Furious, though, it seems like a lock that he’ll be back.
Ludacris (Tej Parker)
Tej was also on the doomed plane, but like Gibson’s Roman, Ludacris’ character has been a fan favorite since he debuted in 2 Fast 2 Furious.
Sung Kang (Han Lue)
Han returned to the franchise in 2021’s F9 after “dying” in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (which, as the real heads know, canonically happens between Fast & Furious 6 and Furious 7 despite being released as the third film in the franchise). While Han was another passenger on the hell plane, Sung Kang absolutely loves being in these movies, so it’s hard to envision a world where he doesn't come back for the “finale.”
Nathalie Emmanuel (Ramsey)
Computer hacker Ramsey was on the plane too, but she’s probably still alive. She created the God’s Eye—they need her!
Jason Statham (Deckard Shaw)
Deckard is a good guy now, especially now that everybody knows he didn’t actually kill Han in Tokyo Drift. He was last seen on his way to rescue his mother, Queenie (Helen Mirren), who was another target of Dante’s.
Jordana Brewster (Mia Toretto)
Mia didn’t have much to do in Fast X, but she’s alive and thus likely to return for Part 2. (As a reminder, Mia is still in a relationship with Brian, who remains alive but retired in the movies following Paul Walker’s 2013 death.)
Jason Momoa (Dante Reyes)
Momoa is almost certainly coming back to wrap up his arc as Dante, the franchise’s most insane, scenery-chewing villain to date. Fingers crossed for another scene where Dante talks to the corpses he keeps in his backyard!
Charlize Theron (Cipher)
After ruining everybody’s lives in The Fate of the Furious, cyberterrorist Cipher is nice now because she also hates Dante. She was last seen in Antarctica with Letty, about to be rescued by Gisele.
Gal Gadot (Gisele Yashar)
Gisele died in Fast & Furious 6 during the crew’s final battle with Owen Shaw (Luke Evans)—or did she? Apparently not, because there she was at the end of Fast X, arriving in Antarctica via submarine to rescue Letty and Cipher.
Other possible returnees include Alan Ritchson (Aimes), Brie Larson (Tess), Scott Eastwood (Little Nobody), Helen Mirren (Queenie) and Rita Moreno (Abuelita Toretto). Kurt Russell’s character, Mr. Nobody, was M.I.A. in the first part, but it seems possible that his disappearance will become a bigger part of the plot in Part 2.
Is Dwayne Johnson in Fast X: Part 2?
Even though someone came back from the dead in Fast X, the biggest twist of all came in a mid-credits sequence that revealed Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is seemingly returning to the franchise after a bitter offscreen feud with Vin Diesel. The scene showed Johnson’s character, Luke Hobbs, receiving a call from Dante, who told him he’s his next target for revenge. “Well, I ain’t hard to find,” Hobbs replied.
So while it’s not yet confirmed whether Johnson will be in Part 2, all signs point to yes. “It was no easy task, because so much has been created in this universe,” Diesel said of Johnson’s Fast X return in a featurette included with the movie’s Blu-ray release. “To tie up all these storylines, this character needed to come back into the mythology.”

What is the Fast X: Part 2 release date?
According to Vin Diesel, Fast X: Part 2 will hit theaters on April 4, 2025. This date seems optimistic at best, but stranger things have happened. (Tej and Roman going to space, for example.)
Is there a Fast X: Part 2 trailer?
There’s no trailer yet for Fast X: Part 2, but watch this space for updates.
Is Fast X: Part 2 the last Fast and Furious movie?
It’s hard to say whether Fast X: Part 2 will be the final installment in the Fast and Furious franchise. Diesel has said The Fast Saga will end after 11 movies, and Fast X: Part 2 will be the 11th film in the series (not counting the 2019 spinoff Hobbs & Shaw). But then in May 2023, he claimed that producers have asked him to make Fast X a trilogy.
“Without tipping the hat too much, I can say this: Going into making this movie, the studio had asked if this could be a two-parter,” Diesel said at the Fast X premiere in Rome. “And after the studio saw this Part 1, they said, ‘Could you make Fast X, the finale, a trilogy?’” When pressed for an official confirmation that a 12th movie is happening, Diesel said, “You’re going to get me in trouble here,” and walked away.
So is Fast X: Part 2 the end of an era, or just the middle chapter of a longer tale? Unclear, but it’s not over till at least one more character is brought back from the dead.
