Your Favorite 2006 Song ‘Hey There Delilah’ Is Becoming a TV Show
Even in an age of nonstop remakes and reboots, this is an unexpected bit of nostalgic TV news: The hit 2006 song “Hey There Delilah,” by the Plain White T’s, is being turned into its own romantic comedy TV show.
“It’s been more than a decade since ‘Hey There Delilah’ was released, and people always ask me about it,” Plain White T’s singer-songwriter Tom Higgenson told The Hollywood Reporter. “A whole lot of people really connected with that song, and I’m very proud of that. I’m so excited to have an opportunity to give a new generation the chance to form their own connection with the song, and fall in love with its story through this new project.”
The emo-folk song, taken from the band’s 2006 album All That We Needed, was inescapable in 2006 and 2007 and went on to top the Billboard Hot 100 and earn two Grammy nominations. It tells the tale of a struggling musician pining long-distance for a New York City college student. (The song is said to be about distance runner Delilah DiCrescenzo, who studied at Columbia University.)
Higgenson developed the concept for the TV series, which is being described as a “contemporary fairy-tale,” with award-winning musical theater writer Jeremy Desmon and producer Michael Barra.
“‘Hey There Delilah’ is a perfect example of an iconic story song that has introduced characters and a premise to a massive multigenerational audience,” Barra told THR. “[It’s] begging to be expanded into a full-length story for contemporary television audiences.”
If you’re dying to relive that late-aughts angst, it might be a while still — the series is in the very early stages of development and will be shopped around to various networks and production studios this summer.
