Our favorite dog-friendly bars in Rhode Island, and why your pooch will love them, too

Nothing says summer like a cold beer, the outdoors and a dog. Luckily, there are numerous spots in Rhode Island where you'll find that trifecta. Consider this your guide to dog-friendly bars, where you can unwind with your furry friend and soak up some rays.

This isn't a full guide to every dog-friendly watering hole, but a handful of solid spots where you can find a drink, good grub, and always, a good dog. A few are even approved by the reporter's beagle mix, Buddy.

The Guild

  • Where is it? Several places. Check out the spacious scene at The Guild's Pawtucket beer hall or catch a picnic table at its Providence beer garden. You can also visit the brewery's Warren location, but dogs are asked to stay outside there.

  • Why humans love it: Craft brews, spacious digs and live music have earned The Guild strong reviews. Food is fairly basic – think pizza, pretzels and nachos – but this is more a spot for a tasty brew and a some munchies rather than a full dinner.

  • Why your dog will love it, too: This is a great place for your pooch to socialize. On any given day, there may be a few furballs hanging around the bar.

Ogie's Trailer Park

  • Where is it? 155 Westminster St., Providence

  • Why humans love it: Funky decor, affordable prices and plenty of parking give Ogie's a good rep. Expect colorful cocktails topped with umbrellas and flamingos, down-to-earth bartenders and no-frills dining from a pickup window serving seasoned tots and more.

  • Why your dog will love it, too: This joint actually has a separate menu just for dogs, apparently named after the one-toothed, cowboy-hat-wearing "Simpsons" character Gummy Joe. Your doggo can chow down on a hamburger, chicken breast, bacon, or better yet, "the champ," a bacon cheeseburger. The Providence Journal has not consulted a veterinarian to see whether that is advised.

Nick-A-Nees

  • Where is it? 75 South St., Providence

  • Why humans love it: This mainstay is unpretentious, with great live music. Stop in to hear local bands, play a round of pool and grab a cheap drink. Just remember to bring cash as this bar doesn't take cards. There is, however, an ATM as backup.

  • Why your dog will love it, too: Nick-a-Nees is well known as a place for pups, so you know it's guaranteed to be a friendly environment for your pooch. This bar isn't quite as spacious as other spots on this list, but still has a wide array of seating for you and your canine, from tables to stools to outdoor space.

Apponaug Brewing Company

  • Where is it? 334 Knight St., Warwick

  • Why humans love it: Apponaug pours a variety of beers on tap every day in various sizes so you can taste several or enjoy one. There's also a long menu of tacos, sliders, salads and more to suit a variety of tastes.

  • Why your dog will love it, too: The brewery has a wide terrace that will give your dog some room to stretch out. As a bonus, it overlooks the Pawtuxet River. Your dog won't be allowed to stay inside the bar, but there is a dog park across to way from the front door if your companion needs space to run.
