Fendi gave Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner blue-green hair and bold black eyeliner

At Milan Fashion Week, Fendi has most often let fashion speak louder than beauty on its runways. It’s unusual, at least for the past few years, to spot anything more than a graphic eyeliner or a bold lip. Remember the chrome-colored glitter lips from the Spring 2017 show?

Which is why it was jolting to see vibrant blue-green hair appear on the catwalk. Model-of-the-moment Kaia Gerber, Kendall Jenner, and the Hadid sisters each wore deep side parts and chopped bangs in teal hues, a contrast to the collection’s browns and tans seen in a few of the opening looks. As for the makeup, Fendi gave its models exaggerated black winged eyeliner, not dissimilar to what Versace is known for showing.

Gerber poked fun at the beauty look, posting a photo of the Looney Tunes Road Runner to her Instagram story, saying, “You guys tell me you don’t see the resemblance…”

Co-creative directors Karl Lagerfeld and Silvia Fendi showed checked prints and stripes on sheer jackets and dresses, between retro Fendi logo-stamped coats, pencil skirts, and tote bags. (Note: Logomania is not dead.) The collection is tangibly tropical, though it might take a trained eye to spot the inspiration. You can’t expect Lagerfeld to be so obvious as to show a Hawaiian-print shirt; rather he opts for oceanic colors and mostera leaf appliqués and hems.

Pretty as the clothes are, though, we wouldn’t fault you if you couldn’t stop staring at the models’ mermaid hair.
