Final Fantasy 14 Dawntrail Expansion Release Date Revealed, Features FF9 References

Final Fantasy 14 is getting its fifth major expansion pack, Dawntrail, in July. During its PAX East 2024 panel, FF14 director Naoki Yoshida revealed new details about the expansion, discussing how it will introduce more large-scale events. Yoshida also acknowledged Dawntrail’s proximity to the Elden Ring’s massive DLC. FF14’s Dawntrail expansion also features plenty of Final Fantasy 9-inspired items, prompting speculation about a proper FF9 remake that has been rumored to be in development.
"We figured everyone would be interested in playing the Elden Ring DLC," said Yoshi-P though a translator. "I'll give you one week. I'll give you one week to enjoy the Elden Ring DLC and then just go into your summer vacation into Dawntrail.

“You may have noticed a lot of Final Fantasy IX references here… but the reason is a secret,” said Yoshida.
Rumors of a Final Fantasy 9 remake started with its appearance in a database from Nvidia in 2021. That leak has largely proven true, with many of the entries in that database being confirmed as real projects, including many of Sony's PC ports. The leak included mentions of an FF9 Remake.
The possibility of an FF9 Remake keeps increasing daily, with Square Enix also working on an FF9 animated series. Since then, there have been rumblings of an FF9 Remake from various leakers. With the success of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series, it's not hard to imagine Square laying the groundwork for a reimagining of one of the best games in the franchise this early, using FF14 as a marketing vehicle.
