The book discusses “troubling” conversations between members of the royal family who allegedly questioned the color of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s son Archie’s skin tone before his birth in May 2019. King Charles and Kate Middleton were purportedly named as the two royals who made the alleged comments about Archie’s skin color in a Dutch translation of the book, which has since been pulled from circulation in the Netherlands.

According to a source who spoke to ET, King Charles is feeling “utterly saddened by the latest developments regarding Omid Scobie’s book and is taking the matter very seriously.” Despite the lack of official statements from Buckingham Palace or Kensington Palace, the insider added that an investigation into the claims is seemingly underway within the palace walls, however the palace has neither confirmed nor denied the accuracy of the names mentioned in the book.
Other reports suggest that the royal family is strategically planning their response to address the fallout from the Dutch publication. A source informed The Telegraph on December 2, 2023, that discussions are ongoing. “Conversations will be had and decisions made with care and time and professionalism rather than rushed over a weekend,” the insider shared. Palace aides are also said to be convening to explore “all options” concerning the claims, including the possibility of legal action.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson from the Dutch publisher of Endgame, Xander Uitgevers, confirmed to ET that a corrected edition of the book by Omid Scobie would be available in bookstores on December 8, 2023. The spokesperson attributed the removal of the book from Dutch shelves to an error in the Dutch edition.
In a statement to the BBC, Scobie maintained that the manuscript he submitted “didn’t have names in it.” He insisted on a “full investigation” to uncover how the names found their way into the Dutch version of the book.
Adding to the complexity of the situation, another source expressed concerns about the impact of this controversy on the already fragile relationship between the royal family and the Sussexes. “The veiled allegations and leaks have further eroded the trust with the family and the Sussexes all over again,” the insider told ET. “Just as it appeared that Harry and Meghan were mending fences with King Charles and trying to put this all behind them.” Now, these recent developments seem to have reopened old wounds—and only time will tell if they can be healed.
