The first day of fall is Sunday, Sept. 22, marked by the autumnal equinox. According to the National Weather Service, the exact time is 6:44 a.m. MT/ 7:44 a.m. CDT.
There are technically two days that you could consider as the start of the fall season. There's astronomical fall, which begins Sept. 22 with the autumnal equinox. Some meteorologists consider Sunday, Sept. 1 as the start of meteorological fall, based on the annual temperature cycle.

What is a fall equinox 2024?
There are only two times a year when an equinox happens — when the Earth's axis is tilted neither toward nor away from the sun — once in the fall and the other in the spring.
During these equinoxes, there's a nearly equal amount of daylight and darkness at all latitudes, according to the National Weather Service.
When will leaves start to change?
The leaf-changing time will vary, based on the weather and where you live in the U.S. According to the 2024 fall foliage prediction map from SmokeyMountains.com, the first leaves will begin to change along the Canadian borders of some northern states as well as in Colorado and Utah by early September.
When is the first day of winter in 2024?
The winter solstice, which will occur on Saturday, Dec. 21, marks the first day of winter and the shortest day and longest night of the year.
