Ford Trucks Recalled Due to Parking Brake Issues

Ford is recalling over 870,000 F-150 pickup trucks in the United States.

According to new documents from the vehicle manufacturer, the electronic parking brakes in newer models are at risk of turning on unexpectedly. Models falling within the 2021 to 2023 model years that have single exhaust systems may be affected.

The malfunction is caused by a rear wiring bundle coming into contact with the rear axle housing, which leads to wear and tear on the wire's covering. Exposing the wire increases the potential for a short circuit. As a result, the parking brake can activate on its own, which may lead to a loss of control and/or an accident.

Drivers may or may not see the parking brake warning light activate on the dashboard.

So far, there have been 918 warranty claims related to wire chafing. 299 of those claims involved the parking brake being activated unexpectedly, which reportedly occurred while the vehicles were being driven in 19 cases. As of July 11, no related crashes or injuries have been reported.

Owners of trucks included in the recall will be notified by mail the week of Sept. 11, 2023. Ford or Lincoln dealers will inspect the rear axle wiring harness and either replace them, where necessary, or install a protective tie strap and tape wrap.

Ford will also reimburse any owner that has serviced the specific issue prior to the recall.

Back in March, Nissan recalled over 700,000 SUVs due to key issues after noticing the vehicle can shut off accidentally in the middle of driving.

In other recall-related news this week, ground beef distributed to ShopRite stores in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts is suspected to be contaminated with Salmonella, though investigators have not issued a formal recall at this time. 16 illnesses, with six hospitalizations, have been linked to the product.
