Former World No. 2 Announces Surprise Comeback to Professional Surfing
Julian Wilson, Aussie aerialist once of Young Guns franchise fame, Tokyo 2020 Olympian, and world number two in 2018, is plotting a comeback to pro surfing.
“The past 6 months I’ve had competing firmly at the forefront of my mind,” the 35-year-old penned via social media. “It’s time for me to give it another crack. My hope is to get a WSL wildcard for the 2025 challenger series.”
After losing major sponsors, creating his own brand, embarking on fatherhood – all amidst the Covid pandemic – Wilson decided to step away from pro surfing to focus on the aforementioned projects. But it looks like he’s still got the fire to compete.

He continued:
“This time three years ago I was sitting in a hotel quarantine room in the aftermath of my Tokyo Olympic campaign, watching my dream as a WT surfer fade away while heading home to be the best partner and Dad that could be during a very challenging time (mentally).
“I don’t regret my decision for a second and I love my wife and family to bits. Nothing in life compares to a healthy relationship at home and the opportunity to raise a family.”
And following Jules announcement, the surf world chimed in with support:
“Yes legend, always my favorite surfer” – Rio Waida
“Been waiting for this” – Seth Moniz
“This is amazing Jules! So stoked to see this happen! – Josh Kerr
“Been waiting for this day!! Go get em!” – Mick Fanning

Whether or not Jules will get a wildcard into the 2025 Challenger Series remains a question. According to the WSL: “CT surfers who make the Mid-Season Cut will not be required to compete at Challenger Series events; though, they can apply for an event wildcard if they wish to compete. CT surfers who fall below the Mid-Season Cut and miss CT requalification will automatically qualify for all Challenger Series events.”
Jules did not compete on the 2024 CT season, therefore this rule does not apply.
Still, he’s got the drive to return to the jersey. Jules continued:
“I’ll be in it for the fun of the challenge and the healthy lifestyle surfing is. I love surfing and I’m still too damn competitive at heart to not give it another shot.”
