Fort Walton Beach SOCKS cat shelter seeks artists' 'meowster-pieces' for fundraiser

FORT WALTON BEACH — Save Our Cats and Kittens (SOCKS), a local nonprofit, no-kill, free-roaming cat shelter, is calling for local artists to submit their "meowster-pieces" ahead of the group's first art show and competition this September.

All funds raised through the event directly profit SOCKS.

Here is what we know:

Event information

The art exhibition will run Sept. 3-21 at the SOCKS event building. An awards presentation and reception will take place from 2-3:30 p.m. on Sept. 21.

Juding will be conducted by a guest juror and through a people's choice system. The guest juror for the event will be J. Wren Supak, director and curator of the Mattie Kelly Art Center Galleries at Northwest Florida State College.

People's choice voting will be determined by an online pay-to-vote systems, with $1 equaling one vote.

Trophies will be awarded to first-,second- and third-place fininshers in each age category for both judging methods, which means nine winners will be determined thorugh each method.

Artist information

To celebrate the inaugrual event, the theme for the 2024 show is all things cat. Artists will be invited to creat works of art in multiple art styles, such as paint, sculpt, photograph and video, craft, sound art, kinetic art or preformance, to showcase feline beauty, agility, independence and playfulness

The event features three age categories: children 12 and younger, teenagers 13 to 17 and adults 18 and older.

All submissions must be original works by the artists. The entry fee is a nonrefundable $25 for up to three pieces per artist. The entry fee will support the reception, artists awards and the shelter.
