Four ways explore Iowa City this weekend from improv comedy to science

Iowa City is getting lucky with consistent spring weather that will continue through the weekend.

Here are four ways to enjoy the sun and all Iowa City offers.

University of Iowa's performance of "In The Red and Brown Water"

The University of Iowa Theatre School will present "In The Red and Brown Water" April 12-14 at David Thayer Theatre (200 N Riverside Dr., Iowa City).

"In The Red and Brown Water" by Tarell Alvin McCraney is set in San Pere, Louisiana. Oya's promising collegiate future is interrupted as she cares for her mother. The narrative is a coming-of-age story amidst romantic relationships, community, and personal aspirations.

The performance starts at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday with a 2 p.m. matinee showing on Sunday, April 14.

Ticket prices range from $5 to $20 and are available on Hancher Auditorium's website.

Sarah Braunstein, in conversation with Rachel Yoder at Prairie Lights 

National Book Foundation "5 Under 35" award-winner Sarah Braunstein will read from her new novel, "Bad Animals." Braunstein will be joined in conversation by author and University of Iowa professor Rachel Yoder.

"Bad Animals" delves into the lives of various characters in a small town, exploring their interconnectedness and the complexities of human nature. The themes range from family dynamics to the darker aspects of society.

Yoder is the author of "Nightbitch," which was optioned for a film adaptation that opens in theatres on Dec. 6.

The two authors' conversation is set for 7 p.m. Friday, April 12, at Prairie Lights.

Iowa City Darwin Day: Science Fest

Iowa City Darwin Day is the community's grand celebration of science. It will be held on Friday, April 12, and Saturday, April 13, at the University of Iowa's Biology Building East and Phillips Hall.

The festival was founded in 2007 for charitable, scientific, and educational purposes. It aims to recognize and appreciate scientific knowledge fueled by human curiosity.

The various festival events are free and open to the public. Standout events include Joseph Graves at 3:30 p.m. on April 12. Renowned for his contributions to evolutionary biology, Graves will discuss race, health, and the built microbiome.

Harmit Malik is recognized for his groundbreaking work in evolutionary biology and genetics, with links to human diseases like cancer and viral infections. He will be hosting a discussion at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

Lady Franklyn is Willow Creek Theatre Company's House improv team, performing most Saturdays at the theatre. The professional improv trope has a show at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 13. The improv team promises an evening of laughter, spontaneity, and unforgettable entertainment.

Tickets are available in advance for $10 or $12 at the door on the day of the show.
