Fox News host who mocked Parkland survivor is threatened with boycott
In the weeks since the Parkland, Fla., shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, student activists like Emma Gonzalez and David Hogg have emerged as faces of the Generation Z gun reform movement. They’ve also attracted the ire of some conservatives.
Fox News’ Laura Ingraham, host of the Ingraham Angle, spoke with David Hogg on her show just after the shooting occurred on Feb. 14. More than a month later, Ingraham mocked Hogg via social media, circulating a story that alleges Hogg was not accepted by four colleges to which the high schooler applied.
As goes the politically charged social media game of virtual volleyball, it was Shannon Coulter‘s turn to serve. Coulter — who launched the “Grab Your Wallet” movement urging consumers to boycott the Ivanka Trump label before and following President Trump’s election — responded to Ingraham by publicly calling upon companies like Wayfair that advertise during Ingraham’s broadcast to stop funneling advertising dollars to the show.
Hi, @Wayfair: your name was mentioned today as a possible advertiser on the @FoxNews show, @IngrahamAngle. Do you advertise on this show and if so, are you concerned about Ms. Ingraham's recent mocking of Parkland shooting survivor @davidhogg111's college application status? pic.twitter.com/KHihJDsNH6

Hundreds of people interacted with Coulter’s tweet, many of whom egged Wayfair to respond. The e-commerce home-goods store issued the following statement to Yahoo Lifestyle: “As a company, we support open dialogue and debate on issues. However, the decision of an adult to personally criticize a high school student who has lost his classmates in an unspeakable tragedy is not consistent with our values. We do not plan to continue advertising on this particular program.”
Coulter has attached herself to multiple progressive causes, along the way encouraging consumer boycotts as a method for driving change. Separately from Coulter’s efforts, conservatively bent consumers threatened to boycott outdoor retailer Patagonia after its chief executive expressed discontent with Trump’s efforts to reduce the size of the Bears Ears monuments in Utah.
So for every progressive reaction, it seems, there is an equal and opposite conservative reaction.
