Free grocery store opens in SF’s Bayview neighborhood
SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A store offering free groceries to residents in need opened in San Francisco’s Bayview District on Tuesday.
The District 10 Community Market, funded by the San Francisco Human Services Agency (SFHSA), is located at 5030 3rd St. It is 4,000 square feet in size and is operated by Bayview Hunters Point Multipurpose Senior Services.

The market offers a “wide selection” of free groceries, Food Empowerment Market said. In addition to the free food, the market will connect local families to social services.
The Bayview/Hunters Point neighborhood was chosen to be the location of the market because it qualifies as a “food desert,” which is an area that does not have reliable access to grocery stores or healthy food, per Food Empowerment Market. The 94124 zip code is one of the lowest-income areas in San Francisco.
The idea was inspired by stores in Santa Barbara and Nashville, Tenn. It is part of three San Francisco food insecure-related legislations that were signed into law in 2021.
