Free job skills courses offered in Columbus
COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — Local job seekers in the Columbus area might beef up their resumes with the launch of a new initiative. Free job skills courses started Aug. 5 with an open house at Victory Mission.
The “Jobs for Life” classes are a collaboration between the Better Work Columbus initiative and the Georgia Center for Opportunity. Instruction is intended to help local job seekers build up their resumes and gain confidence as they prepare to apply for full-time, part-time and volunteer positions.
“It is so great for people who are ready for change in their lives and they’re willing to do the work they need to do to create that change,” Kristen Baker, vice president of workforce solutions for the Georgia Center for Opportunity, said.
Ten weeks of course material, which will be taught at Victory Mission and Spirit Filled Ministries, will cover resume writing, soft skills development, goal setting, finance management and more. Participants will also be able to get personalized coaching throughout the course.
“It is all about the fact that we are in this together. Participant, volunteer, someone on our Better Work team. It doesn’t matter,” Baker said. “We are all in this together and it’s just, just a great way to start to build those relationships.”
Study material includes workbook assignments and discussions designed to aid local job seekers. Free childcare is also offered during class time to make it easier for parents to attend, according to organizers.
Participants are required to attend an open house before starting the course. The next open house will be held at Spirit Filled Ministries from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sept. 10.
