The French Bulldog Is the Most Popular Dog in America—Dethroning the Labrador After 31 Years
Whether you prefer large breeds, dogs that look like puppies at any age, or something in between, many people have a favorite type of dog. And it seems as though Americans are statistically on the same page when it comes to their most beloved breed. According to the American Kennel Club's annual list of the most popular dog breeds, the French Bulldog takes the prize.
This news marks an end to the Labrador Retriever's 31-year reign as the most popular dog breed in America. But it is a dethroning the AKC saw coming—the registry notes that the French Bulldog has been climbing the ranks in popularity over the last 10 years. In fact, just last year, the dog breed ranked second as America's most beloved type of dog.

The petite dog breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1998 and has since become a household name. French Bulldogs can be found in the homes of everyone from families to single dog owners. The breed's surge in popularity is attributed to its small size, quiet demeanor, and charming and adaptable nature.
While this shift is notable, the rest of the top five list looks similar to how it has in past years. The Labrador Retriever didn't stray far—ranking second as America's favorite dog breed. Following the Labrador is the Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, and Poodle. At the bottom of the list are the Sloughi, Norwegian Lundehund, and English Foxhound.
There were also some newly recognized breeds by the AKC in 2022, including the Mudi and Russian Toy, which ranked 150th and 144th respectively. The Bracco Italiano became the 200th breed fully recognized by the AKC last year and will debut in the registration rankings for 2023.
