The French are set to steal the spotlight next month, as Paris prepares to host the 2024 Summer Olympics. The opening ceremony is set to take place on July 26.

Before athletes go for the gold, however, the U.S. is set to celebrate a crispy, golden-brown French classic.

I am, of course, talking about French fries — though they may be French in name only. National French Fry Day falls on “fry-day,” July 12.

Whether you prefer crinkle cut or shoelace; waffle or curly; classic or sweet potato; cheese sauce or ketchup, French fries are a staple side (and sometimes the star of the show) at restaurants.

And while it may be cheesy, we wondered, “Which local eatery’s fries can bring home the gold?”

The Journal Star asked the community about their favorite local French fries and narrowed the field down to the six most-mentioned, non-chain establishments. Contenders included:

  • BLACK BAND Distillery

  • Fort Clark Gastropub/Grill Location

  • Khaki Jack's

  • The Publik House

  • Ulrich's Rebellion Room

  • Weaver's Fresh Food and Drink

This poll is now closed. Thank you to all those who casted their vote. Stay tuned for an announcement on which restaurant reigns supreme in this French fry face-off.
