Hot dog! French's Classic Yellow Mustard gets its own beer
Boy, have we found the perfect drink to wash down all those hot dogs you’ve been eating during quarantine. With frankfurters enjoying something of a renaissance during the pandemic — on account of being cheap, easy to cook and generally crowd-pleasing — it makes sense that its partner in crime (sorry, ketchup fans) would also be given its due ... and brew.
Introducing French’s Mustard Beer, a tangy tropical wheat beer flavored with a familiar condiment: French’s Original Yellow Mustard. Launching Saturday, Aug. 1 — conveniently known as National Mustard Day, which last year saw the release of French’s Mustard Ice Cream — this limited-edition collaboration with Oskar Blues Brewery pairs the punchiness of the sandwich sauce with hits of key lime, lemon, tangerine and passionfruit. It’s tart, it’s sharp, it’s reminiscent of a cider, and dare we say, it’d go great with a ballpark frank. (Remember ballparks?)
Indeed, Oskar Blues head brewer Juice Drapeau recommends pairing the ale with a “loaded hot dog on the hottest day of the year,” per a press release. To that end, French’s and the brewery are also offering up homebrew recipes alongside pointers for whipping up dishes like Mustard Beer Basted Sausages with Onions, a tasty compromise for purists who prefer to eat their mustard than drink it.
From Aug. 1 on, cans of French’s Mustard Beer can be purchased online via the craft beer e-tailer CraftShack, or in person at select Oskar Blues Brewery taprooms in Colorado (Boulder and Longmont) North Carolina (Brevard) while supplies last.
Does it cut the mustard, beer-wise? There’s only way to find out, friends.
