This Funny Video Helps You Visualize Safe Passing Distance
Most drivers know that they should share the road with cyclists, but many are uncertain about just how much space they should leave. The Tasmanian Department of State Growth tackled the topic recently in a funny, short commercial that shows, when it comes down to it, we’re all pretty intuitive about how much personal space everyone needs—in all kinds of uncomfortable situations.
Instead of emphasizing poor depth perception, crash statistics, or other common bike safety tropes, the “Distance Makes a Difference” video equates passing distance with everyday faux pas, like standing at a urinal next to another guy, or creeping up behind someone as he uses the ATM. And, of course, at the end, we see the proper passing distance for cyclists. The video only drives home the message that not giving cyclists their space is just as uncool as breathing down a strangers’ neck—it’s a social rule, not an option.
