Furla Celebrates 90th Anniversary With an Epic Collection Inspired by 9 Decades of Music

Furla, the iconic Italian fashion accessories label, is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year with a collection that pays homage to 90 years of music.

Furla was one of the brands to pioneer customizable handbags, developing the idea of interchangeable handbag flaps that can be swapped in and out with ease to suit your mood and taste.

Furla’s classic Metropolis leather bag, which features a gold chain and hardware buckle, will be available in five colors: petal, magnolia, gold, ruby, and onyx.

To honor all 90 years of Furla’s rich history, the brand is unveiling nine flaps to complement the Metropolis bag. Each flap represents a musical decade.

It starts with the Roaring Twenties — the beginning of jazz and an era that celebrated wealth, opulence, glitz, and glamour as well as the iconic flapper girl. Furla’s take on the 1920s is a luxurious velvet-based flap decorated with a sea of sparkling gold embellishments, beads, and crystals that even Daisy Buchanan would approve of.

The 1930s and 1940s furthered the jazz movement and the rise of swing music, which Furla interprets with a flap made of tortoiseshell PVC with ivory-colored mink fur to showcase the glamorous side of the 1930s.

The 1950s saw the rise of rock ‘n’ roll and Elvis Presley, and the 1960s exploded with the Beatles. The 1960s Furla flap is made of a muted dark gray and black version of the Union Jack flag, and features golden stud detailing that mimics a turntable.

The 1970s were all about disco, but a personal favorite of mine is the 1980s flap that features a heart-shaped patch and silver bracket-like piercings to represent the new wave and punk musical era. The 1990s center on the hip-hop generation, while the new millennium delves into the digital and technological age, i.e. electronica.
