Future Hope Park plans highlighted at Juneteenth celebration

JOPLIN, Mo. — The City of Joplin is coming together to raise money for a future park through the Juneteenth celebration.

During its Third Annual Joplin Juneteenth celebration, organizers asked for the community’s help to bring ‘Hope Park’ to the East Town neighborhood.

Located just off of South High Avenue and beside the Joe Becker Stadium, the celebration sold Juneteenth t-shirts and mugs.

QR codes were on every poster and on social media to help spread the word.

The park is expected to have a basketball court, playground, walking trail, and pavilion as well as a wall for kids and families to write down hopes and dreams.

The project is estimated to cost around $500,000, all with the help of the community.

East Town Dream District Executive Director, Melodee Colbert-Kean, says her hope is to bring life to dreams.

“It’s somewhere that as a community, parents, grandparents, friends, all the people can come and gather and just sit down and have a good time, while kids are playing and have community like when we used to have when I grew up. You know, we would just come hang out at the park, have a good time. It’s just, that’s what it’s all about, creating family fun,” said Melodee Colbert-Kean, East Town Dream District Executive Director.

Colbert-Kean says all proceeds from this year’s two-day Juneteenth celebration, as well as future events, will go towards the future Hope Park.
