As much as we love seeing Kaavia James Wade’s signature #ShadyBaby scowl, her smiles are even more delightful — perhaps because they’re so rare, from what we can tell by her social media presence. Gabrielle Union appeared to be the reason behind her daughter’s toothy grin over the weekend, when she became her daughter’s curly natural hair twin.
“See @kaaviajames mama’s got hair like yours!!” Union wrote on Instagram Sunday, sharing a photo of Kaavia on her back. “When I took my braids out she was like ???? now mom & baby both rocking their natural curls ????? #QuarantineNaturalHairChronicles.”
This was after Union showed off her leave-in conditioning process on Saturday, writing, “When your natural locks appreciate the lock down. Unlocking the secret soon.”
Union last revealed her short curls in October, but since Kaavia was then 11 months old, she might not remember that look on her mom. This time of social distancing has become a chance for many others to let their curls go free, and we can all enjoy the hashtag #quarantinecurls on Instagram for more inspiration.
The actor, writer, and co-producer of the Oscar-winning short Hair Love clearly understands the value of showing her daughter and other children the beauty of all types of Black hair. She made that point when she and husband Dwyane Wade invited as their Oscar guest DeAndre Arnold, the Texas teenager who was told he would be suspended and wouldn’t graduate high school unless he cut off his dreadlocks.
Of course, Union isn’t just focused on educating children about beauty. On Kaavia’s Instagram account over the weekend, she also shared a moving video of Black girls sharing books with each other, set to Beyoncé’s “Brown Skin Girl.” Watch it only if you’re emotionally ready for some happy tears.
Here are just some of the other times Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade were the best parents.
