Has Gal Gadot Finally Made It Cool to Wear Flats on the Red Carpet?
Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman is breaking box office records. And the Israeli actress, who plays Diana Prince in the blockbuster, is forging her own path both on screen and off. For her, that means not wearing back-breaking stilettos while promoting her movie. She wore Aldo sandals to the Los Angeles premiere of her film, and Rocket Dog kicks in Mexico.
It’s taken 13 years —since Sofia Coppola made headlines for donning a pair on the Golden Globes red carpet in 2004 — but perhaps, finally, wearing flats has become acceptable again. Worth noting: Gigi Hadid just rocked a comfy-looking Stuart Weitzman pair at the CFDA awards on Monday night. And Tatiana Maslany was kicking it in Louboutin loafers while talking up the final season of Orphan Black this week.
“I wish more people wore flats. Heels are not comfortable, no matter what anyone says,” Erica Cloud, who styles Mandy Moore, tells Yahoo Style. “With flats, you don’t [need] to worry about falling over. Being in flats is cool. Mandy wears flats all the time in her personal life. She’s got Sergio Rossi and Chanel. Kristen Stewart wore Vans at Cannes last year. Flats are not dumpy.”
In fact, says Cloud, they convey an easy confidence, an attitude that you’re not willing to suffer for fashion and that you “just rolled up” to an event without overthinking anything.
“It adds a twist because a heel is so typical. It’s never inappropriate if you’re doing it right,” says Cloud. “Mules are a happy medium. Mandy wore a pair a of Sergio Rossi striped ones, almost a Pilgrim mule, to an event that Minka Kelly had.”
Balance and proportion are key when going flat.
“It’s important to show the ankle. If you’re wearing something baggy, it’s like Lauren Hutton, a cool trouser suit. Or pair flats with a nice summer dress,” says Cloud.
Her current favorites: the classic Chanel flat, Sergio Rossi’s selections, and, on the more accessible end, Everlane’s offerings. “They’re so pretty and refined,” says Cloud.
