This Game Room Has a Hidden Bar and Doubles As a Library
For a family of four in Redondo Beach, California, the room off of the entry of their home was rarely used—but they knew it had the potential to be the multifunctional family hub they craved. So they enlisted Los Angeles–based designer Linda Hayslett of LH.Designs to makeover the space.
“My clients wanted a game room that functioned as a library and a hangout for adult entertaining and family game night,” Hayslett tells House Beautiful. The clients’ only design request? No white cabinets.
Inspired by the rich blues, teals, and greens of Craftsman and Art Deco millwork, Hayslett chose Dunn-Edwards Bell Blue paint for the custom built-in cabinetry, which hosts books, games, and more. “The blue gives a casual, upscale look with its rich color and hits the mark in making the room a showstopper,” Hayslett says.
For seating, Hayslett replaced the sofa and miscellaneous chairs with built-in benches—one of which hides a small storage compartment. In the center of the room, a game table transforms into a coffee table, easily switching between hangout modes. There’s even a hidden mini bar nestled within the cabinetry.
“The clients specifically wanted a bar that was tucked away,” Hayslett says. “You don't notice it, but when you open it, there's a lot of space for snacks and goodies for game night, entertaining, or even a nightcap.”
The room is finished with cozy accessories, including a rug and chairs from World Market, Pindler fabrics on the window and cushions on the built-in seating, and a flower arrangement from Empty Vase—all of which make it suitable for quiet reading or a competitive family game night. Something tells us the family won't have any trouble putting the space to use going forward.
