Game of Thrones, Chernobyl and Chris O'Dowd win at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards

This weekend in Los Angeles saw the 71st Emmy Awards begin with the Creative Arts Emmys awarded in the technical and acting categories – the Primetime Emmys will then take place on Monday 23 September.

The biggest winners of the night was HBO's Game of Thrones, which won 10 Emmys on Sunday, bringing its total to a record breaking 32 Emmys for the final season. Five of those Emmys were for The Long Night, which was criticised by fans at the time for being so dark you could barely see any of the action.

The National Geographic's Oscar Documentary Feature winner Free Solo, about rock climber Alex Honnold, picked up seven awards, as did HBO's Chernobyl, which puts the streaming giant on 25 total Emmys from the weekend: a good few of points ahead of its rival Netflix, which stalled at 17. Notably, Netflix won three Emmys for Natasha Lyonne's comedy drama Russian Doll and one for When They See Us, about the Central Park Five.

Chris O'Dowd and Rosamund Pike each won an Emmy for British comedy series State of the Union, in which they star as a couple meeting at a pub before marriage counselling throughout 10, 10-minute episodes. The coup was all the sweeter for the pair, since the show did not originally make it into the nominations list in July, until the "mini-sodes" series Better Call Saul Employee Training: Madrigal Electromotive Security was disqualified for being too short for the category at under two minutes.
