‘Game of Thrones’ Season 8: How Do You Kill the Night King?
With Game of Thrones being the way it is, it’s almost impossible to say exactly what’s going to happen in any one episode. One thing we do know for sure, though, is that this upcoming season is going to be pretty much entirely about defeating the Night King and his army of the dead. Jon Snow and company have come face-to-face with the piercingly blue-eyed king-created thousands of years ago by the Children of the Forest to protect them against the First Men-and his growing army of terrifying White Walkers and wights, and they’ve started to learn how to defeat them. But what exactly is going to take down the army of the dead’s leader? Well, it looks like there are a few options.
Dragonglass
Ever since the first Walker was killed using dragonglass (by bookish Sam, of all people), Jon’s army has been on a mission to equip themselves with it. And now that they’ve harvested a sh*t-ton of it from the caves at Dragonstone and made a bunch of weapons out of it, it seems like the obvious choice. There would also just be something so poetic about dragonglass creating and destroying the Night King.
Valyrian Steel
In season seven, we see Jon shatter a White Walker to pieces with Longclaw, the Valyrian steel sword he was gifted by Jeor Mormont when Jon left to join the Night’s Watch in season one. It seemed like the White Walker was genuinely surprised to find out that Jon’s sword could stand up to the Walker’s weapons, so we’re not even sure if they realized they could be killed by the steel.
This is also when we learn that once a White Walker is killed, so are all of the wights it created, meaning if someone is able to kill the Night King-the OG White Walker-then the entire army will be defeated. While Valyrian steel is pretty rare, four of the show’s best fighters, and Sam, all have swords made from it: Jaime, Brienne, Arya, and Jon.
Dragon Fire
While we know normal fire kills the undead wights, it doesn’t seem to have an effect on the Walkers. Dragon fire, however, is much more powerful, and with two dragons fighting on the side of the living, it could possibly be enough to take out the Night King.
