Garth Brooks Hints at the Return of His Rock Alter Ego

Garth Brooks seems to be playing around with the idea of bringing back Chris Gaines, the rock alter ego he created over 20 years ago.

Back in 1999, Brooks came up with a fictional character, a dark-haired Australian rocker, who he named Chris Gaines. He turned into Gaines for his album that year, which was titled Garth Brooks...in the Life of Chris Gaines.

The album was supposed to accompany a film about the character's backstory, but it never ended up making it to the screen. Fans were left with just the one-off album, making the fictional persona a short-lived project.

But now, Brooks thinks a resurgence for Chris Gaines might be on the horizon, revealing that a comeback for the alter ego is on his list of things to do.

"The Gaines project was a lot of time put in—because it’s not natural, you’re acting on a record—but I want to do it simply for people who love the Gaines project," the crooner, now 61, said in an interview at Billboard Country Live in Nashville on Wednesday, June 7.

"And selfishly, I love the Chris Gaines record, so I want to do it for me. It challenged me as a vocalist," he added, before hinting at a possible comeback. "So I don’t know when we’re going to get to it, but it’s on the list."

Brooks further fueled the excitement while talking about the origin of the 1999 record, which he said was actually created as a compilation of greatest hits from Gaines' five fictional previous records, which never came to be after the accompanying film, The Lamb, was scrapped.

"The five albums have to come out,” he teased during Wednesday's conversation, per Taste of Country. "I don’t know if it's because I'm 114 years old, but now everything takes three hours more than it took time to do before."

But no matter how long the new project takes, tons of the musician's fans were still ecstatic about the news, including one person who wrote on Twitter, "This is solidly uplifting news."

"screaming crying throwing up," another Twitter user quipped, though it's not exactly clear if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
