The Gates Are Getting Ready to Open: CBS Commits to a New Soap Opera
On the heels of CBS announcing The Talk will come to an end in December comes word that The Gates, a new soap opera, is come to the eye network. After taking several cancellation hits over the past 15 years or so, the soap opera genre is going to have five — not four — shows on TV.
A New Soap Opera Is Coming in 2025
Deadline broke the news that CBS has ordered The Gates and the new serial will premiere in January 2025 on CBS. The Talk, the CBS talk show that replaced As the World Turns after a 54-year run, in 2010, will conclude its run in December, as previously reported.
There’s no official word on the premiere date and/or time slot for The Gates right now. It’s believed it will take The Talk‘s time slot. Check out Soap Hub‘s dream casting suggestions for The Gates here.
Michele Val Jean, formerly of Bold and the Beautiful and General Hospital, will serve as writer and showrunner. “It’s go time!” Val Jean posted on X, formerly Twitter. The other showrunners for The Gates are Sheila Ducksworth, Leon Russell, Derrick Johnson, and Kimberly Doebereiner.

The Gates is a joint production between CBS Studios and the NAACP. The show will be produced by CBS Studios and the NAACP venture in partnership with P&G Studios, a division of Procter & Gamble.
This will be the first new network soap opera since Passions debuted on NBC in 1999.
