Target has joined forces with Gee’s Bend, a well-known community of Alabama-based quilters, for a Black History Month collaboration that celebrates more than two centuries of artisans dating back to the 19th century — and the result is a graphic, meticulously made product line that’s very modern, oh-so practical and undeniably captivating.
These days, Gee’s Bend is a kind of cooperative of quilters — but in the antebellum South, it was a community of enslaved women who began quilting out of necessity, to keep themselves and their families warm at night. In the process, their stunning artistry took shape. It wasn’t until the Civil Rights era that Gee’s Bend quilters began earning a profit and becoming recognized for their craftsmanship — and today, some of their work is even displayed in major museums throughout the U.S.
Now, the Gee’s Bend X Target line makes this women-led movement accessible to all of us in just a few clicks. The collection includes housewares, accessories and even clothing for the whole family in designs that make a serious statement all on their own. Here are a few of our favorite picks to to put in your shopping before the end of February — starting at just $5.
