George Gilbey, Former 'Celebrity Big Brother' Contestant, Dead at 40

George Gilbey

British reality star George Gilbey, who appeared on both Gogglebox and Celebrity Big Brother, has died, the BBC reports. He was just 40 years old.

According to the publication, Gilbey died on the morning of Wednesday, March 27, after falling from an unspecified height while working as an electrician. Emergency personnel responded to the scene at manufacturing business EGL Homecare in Shoeburyness, a coastal town in the City of Southend-on-Sea, where he was confirmed deceased.

Essex police told the publication that a man in his 40s was later arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter, but did not provide further details about the incident or the name of the suspect at this time, as an investigation in partnership with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is ongoing.

Gilbey, alongside his mother and stepfather, appeared in eight seasons of Gogglebox, a reality series documenting families and friends' reactions as they watch other television series, between 2013 and 2018, and also starred on Celebrity Big Brother in 2014.

The former series issued their well wishes to his family on Twitter, while a former Big Brother co-star, Ricci Guarnaccio, shared a series of photos with his late friend, who he said he will "hugely miss."

According to the BBC, someone also left a bouquet of flowers at the entrance gates of the company on Thursday morning.

Gilbey was preceded in death by his stepfather, Peter McGarry, in 2021, who died of bowel cancer at the age of 71. He is survived by his 7-year-old daughter, Amelie, whom he shared with ex-girlfriend Gemma Conway.
